The ground-breaking BMW i3 will have a starting price of $41,350 in the US.
It has a range of around 100 miles on a single charge while a range extender version, which can travel around 200 miles, will cost from $45,300.
The destination and handling fee is an extra $925, while savings can be had through federal or local tax incentive schemes put in place to boost sales of electric cars. It is set to go on sale in the US between April and June 2014.
The BMW i3 has a 170hp electric motor and can do 0-60mph in around 7.2 seconds. The car has a top speed of 93mph, which is electronically limited to make the car as efficient as possible. The car is just 157in long and 70in wide, with a minute turning circle of just 32.3 feet, making it ideal for city driving and fitting into small parking spaces.
It takes just 3 hours to fully recharge at home using a 200V 32 amp charger. An optional SAE DC Combo fast charger increases the charge time to just 30 minutes, with 80 per cent of charge being received in just 20 minutes. Much of the car is made of renewable, sustainable materials including the carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof panel, instrument panel and interior. Even the KEY is made from renewable castor seeds.
The BMW i3 has the interior space of a normal BMW 3 series, but an environmental footprint similar to the much smaller BMW 1 Series. The German firm’s electric i series cars were developed after testing the cars over around 12.5MILLION miles, in tests involving over 1,000 members of the public. It was found that people drive around 30 miles a day on average, well within the scope of the BMW i3.
